Studies Show CBD Can Help With Depression Symptoms

Over the last few years, physicians and researchers alike have become more aware of the benefits of CBD for depression.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, depression affects an estimated one in 15 adults every year and one in six people at some time in their life.

Additionally, the World Health Organization reports depression is the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. More than 300 million people are now living with depression, an increase of more than 18% between 2005 and 2015.

A huge number of Americans take antidepressants – but these drugs are not always effective. In fact, an estimated 33% of depression sufferers admit that medication does not offer relief. Moreover, it’s no secret that antidepressants can cause some fairly unpleasant side effects.

The good news is, every year more people are discovering that CBD oil is a natural option for alleviating some of their symptoms.

CBD For Depression

CBD is one of the 60+ naturally occurring compounds found in all cannabis plants. In the human body, endocannabinoids are the molecules that act as chemical messengers in the “endocannabinoid system,” the parts of our nervous system containing cannabinoid cell receptors which respond to cannabinoids and tell the body to do certain things.

The human body naturally produces its own cannabinoids with the help of fatty acids found in foods such as nuts, seeds and fish, but the same receptors bind to the compounds found in CBD.

Research shows that CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, a collection of cell receptors and the corresponding molecules in the human body, which helps to regulate essential human functions such as sleep, appetite, mood, pain, and pleasure among other things.

Unlike THC, the cannabinoid associated with causing marijuana’s “high effect,” CBD has a different, more indirect interaction with these cell receptors.

CBD has the unique ability to directly interact with other cell receptors, including serotonin and dopamine receptors. Thus, when ingested, CBD influences brain activity and one byproduct is the release of serotonin and dopamine throughout the body.

Studies Show CBD To Be Effective

Two studies uncovered these benefits of CBD oil with symptoms of depression. In one study, conducted in 2011 while studying the modulation of the serotonin system through endocannabinoid signaling, researchers found “ample evidence that endocannabinoids are important regulators of stress responses.”

During depression, plant cannabinoids such as CBD have the ability to regulate one’s response to stressful situations.

Additionally, Jose Alexandre Crippa and his colleagues at the University of San Paulo in Brazil and King’s College in London have conducted pioneering research into CBD as an anti-depressant. At high concentrations, CBD directly activates the serotonin receptor, thereby resulting in an anti-depressant effect.

When ingested, CBD directly interacts with serotonin and dopamine receptors, influencing brain activity and the release of serotonin and dopamine throughout the body.

A 2016 study reported, “Our results demonstrate that CBD exerts fast and maintained antidepressant-like effects.”

Another 2016 study concluded, “These findings extend the limited knowledge on the antidepressant effect of CBD, now shown for the first time in a genetic animal model of depression.

The results coming out of Brazil support many of the other preliminary studies into the compounds of cannabis for treating depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

It’s striking how cannabis compounds seem to have benefits for a wide range of mental health issues, especially considering mental health issues overlap for many patients. For example, people who suffer from one anxiety, also tend to suffer from depression as a secondary condition.

In an extensive literature review, covering CBD for use as an antidepressant and as an anxiolytic, surveyed 15 separate studies. It’s clear from this review, that CBD can subdue fear response, reduce anxiety, and soothe symptoms of depression, at least so far as in animal studies.

In one example, a small trial showed CBD to be just as effective at soothing anxiety as a common anti-anxiety medication – diazepam. Another study demonstrated the antidepressant-like effects of CBD was comparable to that of imipramine, a pharmaceutical. These are just a few examples, among many, of the potential of CBD to become a novel new tool for addressing mental health issues.

CBD case studies show a very clear connection between CBD and its use as an antidepressant.

Can Anybody Use CBD For Depression?

Anybody can use CBD for depression without fear. It is not a psychoactive substance, so there is no danger of getting “high” from it. There are also no adverse side effects when using CBD products.

Although there is still much research that needs to be completed, the early signs of CBD for depression are good. To date, there is no evidence that CBD is addictive or dangerous.

The fact that CBD could be used as an effective treatment for depression while helping patients feel better within an hour of starting treatment, is amazing. Antidepressants can be dangerous, addictive and expensive for life-long treatment, but CBD oil is safe and almost instantaneously effective.

It is, however, important to remember that during a pregnancy, you should discuss the use of CBD for depression with your medical practitioner or health care professional.

If you currently use any pharmaceutical or other meds for your depression, it is also important that your doctor advise you on how to go about changing from the chemical substances to CBD Oil.

Imagine a scenario where the world’s most effective antidepressant is growing naturally all around us! For the countless thousands of people who already use CBD for depression on a daily basis, this scenario is a reality.

Learn About The 9 Proven Health Benefits Of CBD

In 2018, CBD oil was big in the media. This natural remedy has been reported to provide real medicinal benefits from stopping seizures to alleviating anxiety and helping insomniacs—with no side effects, according to the World Health Organization.

The research and proven studies are pretty amazing, here’s a list of nine proven health benefits of CBD.

Stress

A good number of CBD users enjoy its stress elimination properties. Elements of the oil directly activate serotonin receptors in the brain causing an anti-stress effect.

Chronic stress disorders, like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), can be relieved with CBD. CBD can help the brain to dampen its response to fear and reduce memories associated with fear. The presence of CBD helped to block fear memories, meaning it could be used to help the brain recover its ability to eliminate recurring memories in patients with PTSD.

CBD can also promote several processes in the brain that help to combat the effects of stress to regulate anxiety and depression. One such process is called neurogenesis, or the creation of new neurons in the brain in which the neural connections in the brain can be restored to a healthy state.

Anxiety and Depression

CBD has been found to be an anti-anxiety medication as well as an anti-depressant. Whether it’s social anxiety or generalized anxiety disorder, CBD may be the solution you’re looking for. “Most patients seem to be using CBD as an anti-anxiety medication… it helps calm them down and relax them,” said Dr. Solomon. “The biggest clinical studies show it does help decrease anxiety when you take 300 to 600mg of CBD.”

A 2014 journal of CNS and Neurological Disorders gave credit to CBD for its effective anti-depressant effect. It prevents recurring anxiety problems in a normal state of mind and provides a calming effect of serenity.

In another review of the oil from Neurotherapeutics, it is given credence for its ability to manage conditions like General Anxiety Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Panic Disorder.

Insomnia

If you’re looking to catch up on some sleep, CBD may be able to help you. Some smaller studies have shown that CBD at bedtime could improve sleep, and a study on rats in 2013 showed that CBD increased total sleep time.

“What CBD does is help balance our endocannabinoid system, the main job of which is to keep our body in homeostasis,” says Aimée Gould Shunney, a licensed naturopathic doctor at Santa Cruz Integrative Medicine.

That’s why it’s being increasingly used as a sleep aid, she says. “The major reason why most people don’t sleep is because they’re stressed out, they’re anxious, they can’t shut their brain off,” she explains. “What CBD does is calm down your body’s stress response and bring those cortisol and adrenaline levels back to baseline.”

Chronic Pain

CBD can be as effective for pain relief as an opioid, but without the potential for deadly addiction. The compounds in CBD oil provide quick relief from inflammation and pain.

Dr. Solomon shared a self-report study he conducted at U.C. Berkeley, which tracked patients that were using opioids for pain relief. When subjects tried using CBD instead of opioids, the majority “reported that CBD provided relief equal to their other medications, but without the unwanted side effects.” He noted that more research needs to be done, but all signs point to pain relief—which would lead to fewer opioid-related deaths.

Among the top uses of CBD is to manage chronic pain diseases like fibromyalgia and arthritis. Over the counter pain killers have harmful effects such as liver damage and are thus unsuitable for prolonged use. This is why many chronic pain patients are opting to shift to alternative medicine for hope.

Brain Function

Another benefit of using CBD is its ability to boost cognition so that the brain is working at optimal conditions avoiding mood swings, trauma and anxiety.

CBD protects neurons in the brain from damage due to aging deformities and diseases. Damaged neurons can lead to loss of basic functions like balance, locomotion, talking, memory and breathing.

The neuro-protective agents in CBD are due to anti-oxidants present in its composition. These include ascorbic acid also known as vitamin C and a-tocopherol (vitamin E).

Epilepsy and Seizures

In 2018, the FDA approved a CBD-based drug to treat seizures, which was a huge step in making this natural medicine more available to the public and to patients who need it to survive. To date, of all the reported health benefits of CBD oil, this has been the most researched (and proven) use.

Patients suffering from seizures and epilepsy attacks can benefit greatly from the use of CBD. In a recent study on children with treatment resistant-epilepsy, doctors found that there was a reduction in the number of attacks in about 80% of the children.

In another journal, the British Journal of clinical Pharmacology published in the year 2013, CBD was mentioned as a suitable treatment for conditions such as epilepsy and schizophrenia among others.

Diabetes

Patients diagnosed with diabetes need to be vigilant in selecting diet and supplements for better living. CBD oil is one such supplement packed with nutrients and vitamins that could benefit just about anyone but especially diabetic persons. It helps in blood sugar regulation among other imbalances related to diabetes of all types.

CBD has low sugar content and thus considered a suitable food additive for diabetic persons. Additionally, it contains a proper ratio of the fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6 that are essential to lowering cholesterol. This will reduce the deposition of cholesterol in the inner walls of blood vessels reducing the risk of vascular disease.

Daily dosage of CBD can help to prevent stroke and heart attacks.

Rejuvenate Skin, Hair and Nails

As it is an anti-inflammatory, you may find CBD skin-care products helpful when applied topically.

Some research even points to CBD being effective as an acne treatment, since it may limit inflammation in the sebum-producing glands that can lead to breakouts. If you’re not having luck with traditional acne-fighting treatments, it may be worth giving CBD a shot.

Application of the oil topically on skin could help combat acne due to its antimicrobial properties. CBD also regulates sebum production which prevents acne.

As for anti-aging beauty products, there are anti-aging CBD products such as creams and cleansers. Owing to its numerous nutrients and vitamins, CBD promotes healthy beautiful skin and hair growth.

Heart Health

More research needs to be done, but there is some evidence CBD can protect the heart against vascular damage caused by high glucose, inflammation, or type 2 diabetes, according to a 2013 study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.

The European Journal of Pharmacology also published a study earlier this year that pointed toward CBD aiding heart health. Perhaps what is most interesting is that CBD could mitigate the negative cardiovascular effects of stress and high blood pressure, providing a potential alternative to traditional medications used to lower blood pressure.

Although there are many proven health benefits of CBD, it isn’t a cure-all, despite what the best efforts of marketers may tell you. “It doesn’t work for everything,” said Perry Solomon, M.D., a board-certified anesthesiologist and founder/chief medical officer of HelloMD. For example, “If you have a lung infection like bronchitis, you’re not going to cure something like that with CBD.”
